The Recorded History of Poker Chips

[ English | Deutsch | Español | Français | Italiano ]

Poker chips have been manufactured from a wide selection of materials in an almost endless variety of styles since the birth of wagering and the need to keep track of winnings. The most common materials employed at present in the manufacture of new poker chips are plastic, clay, and acrylics. Clay chips, the original of the bunch, have been made in America since the late 19th century.

Back in the 1800s, poker players appear to be using any tiny valuable object you can imagine. Early poker players occasionally employed jagged gold pieces as well as chips – primarily made of wood and clay. By the 20th century, poker chip designs began to employ a greater prominence, and the smooth sides of older chips gave way to chips with ridges to hold them neatly stacked together.

There is little or no doubt that poker has increased steadily in universal appeal since its origin in the 1800s. With the huge increase of net gaming and unique television shows, community appeal in poker has accelerated faster than ever before. Most individuals are first introduced to poker by TV showslike "Celebrity Poker" or "Poker After Dark," and many will wager on their first hands on the internet. Despite web poker’s rise, nothing competes with the feeling of mixing weighty poker chips in your hand, tossing chips into the middle of a poker table, or stacking tall pilesstacks of chips after showing a winning hand.
