Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he liked betting on different card games when he was young. He found himself getting very aggressive in these card games as he was competing against his father. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little while and moved to New York to participate in some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were difficult as he played countless hours and lost a majority of the time. He made some additional money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he could boost his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an effort to acquire more sleep and focus attention even more on poker.

The actual improvement in his abilities began when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would often compete against each other. Howard was able to access a number of the foremost players in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would sharpen his strategic thinking skills. Howard used these strategic ideas in the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.

He also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the proper decision. He told Annie Duke to move out to Las Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie is one of the greatest women players the poker arena today. Howard Lederer relocated to Sin City in 1993 and competed in money games for the successive decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
