Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he enjoyed playing various card games at a young age. He found himself becoming very competitive in these card games as he was competing against his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little while and relocated to New York City to play some serious chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were rough as he played countless hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He earned some additional cash by becoming an runner for the poker players. He judged he could boost his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and focus attention even more on poker.
The real improvement in his skills began when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would often compete against each other. He had access into several of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking abilities. Howard used these strategic ideas in the game of NL hold’em.
Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of the game as she would always be asking questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie is one of the best female players the poker world today. He relocated to Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the subsequent 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
