Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he loved participating in numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming very competitive in these particular card games while playing his father. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and focus attention even more on poker.

The definite improvement in his abilities happened when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best players would frequently challenge one another. Howard was able to access several of the best players in chess. Howard also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. She was an excellent student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper decision. He told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the strongest female players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard headed to Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the following 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
